Permit Checklist for Sikkim Car Rental (2025-26)
⚠️ Important Notice: > Aadhaar Cards and PAN Cards are NOT accepted as valid ID proof for Restricted Area Permits (RAP) in Sikkim. Please carry your Voter ID Card or Passport.
1. Restricted Areas & Locations
You will need a special permit (issued through a registered travel agent like Tour Adviser) for the following routes:
East Sikkim: Nathula Pass, Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Baba Mandir, and Zuluk Silk Route.
North Sikkim: Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, and Gurudongmar Lake.
2. Required Document Checklist
Ensure you have these ready at least 24 hours before your trip starts:
[ ] ID Proof: Original Voter ID or Indian Passport (plus 4 photocopies).
[ ] Photographs: 4 recent passport-sized color photos per person.
[ ] For Children (Below 18): Birth Certificate (in English) or a valid Passport.
[ ] Foreign Nationals: Valid Passport, Visa, and Inner Line Permit (ILP) obtained at Rangpo or Melli check posts. (Note: Foreigners are not allowed in Nathula Pass or Gurudongmar Lake).
3. Critical Rules for Car Rentals
No Outside Vehicles: Only vehicles with Sikkim-registered number plates (SK) are allowed to enter restricted zones (Nathula/North Sikkim). Your Bagdogra/NJP taxi will drop you at Gangtok.
Permit Timing: Applications are processed by 10:00 AM daily. Documents submitted after this time will be processed for the next day.
Nathula Pass: Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Permits are limited; we recommend booking 48 hours in advance.
